Subtle electric Fire

This suite of eight musical settings for voice and cello of Walt Whitman poetry was commissioned by Brian Selznick (author of Academy Award nominated “Hugo”) for his theater piece Live Oak with Moss.

Based on new research into a secret sequence of love poems woven into Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” the piece focuses on the forbidden sensual love between the poet and his young male student. A rhapsody on love and loss.

“Robert Een’s compositions are a mesmerizing intertwining of voice and cello.”
